Review of Everybody Wants Some!! (2016) by Tatsuhito K — 06 Nov 2016
I had the best time ever. Within the first 3 minutes, I knew I was in for a great ride. This is the best party movie since "Dazed and Confused", and if you love Dazed as much as I do, you will have an enormously great time watching "Everybody Wants Some", a sweet, funny, wildly entertaining and totally irresistible comedy about sex, drugs and parties. It may not be as profound or meaningful as Linklater's masterpieces ("Waking Life", "Before Sunset/Midnight" and "Boyhood"), but it's still filled with witty dialogue, lovable characters, and a killer classic rock soundtrack that will make you tap your toes with sheer joy. Although I found one particular character incredibly annoying, and there was this one bizarre plot contrivance that felt out of place, it doesn't change the fact that I loved being a part of this testosterone-filled college baseball team. One of Linklater's best films. I loved it, it's great.
Updated: I've seen the film 7 times now and I must say it is not one of Linklater's best films. It's still fun to watch and I love watching these baseball players interacting with each other, but I realize that there is not enough depth to its female characters, and some of the scenes goes on a little too long. While I appreciate Linklater's non-judgmental approach to his characters, there are a few characters in the film that are utterly despicable and annoying. The dialogue is so sharp and the soundtrack is fantastic, I love a lot of the performances in here, but the more I watch the film, the less I start to like it. It's still a good movie, but I don't love it as much as "Boyhood" or the Before trilogy.
