Review of Every Which Way but Loose (1978) by Kevin M — 25 Jul 2007
You can tell this movie was made in the seventies not only because of the clothes, hair styles etc, but because of the things they get away with that they never would today. Many times the main cast refer to women as "chicks." Pranks are played on women who turn them down in bars (things that would definitely end in a law suit these days - like putting false teeth in a woman's soup).
The movie really has four main cast members: Philo Beddoe (Eastwood), a truck driver by day and bare knuckle fighter by night, his brother Orville (Lewis), his love interest Lynn Halsey-Taylor (Locke), but the one who steals the show is Clyde (an Orangutan called Manis).
The movie follows Philo as he races across the country, with Orville and Clyde in tow, to find Lynn Halsey-Taylor who he believes is in trouble with her abusive boyfriend.
Along the way to make money, Philo takes part in several fights to earn money and they meet up with Echo (D'Angelo), who joins them on their trip.
This movie is great fun, and one everyone should see at least once. Or in my case, ten or twenty times due to ITV's way of re-running movies at least two times a year.
