Review of Everly (2015) by Michael S — 31 Jan 2015
Where to begin... I was a fan of director Joe Lynch's first film, "Wrong Turn 2", feeling that he gave the splatter flick a fun sense of gory, "balls-to-the-wall", "Who gives a damn about good or bad taste" vibe, so it was with *slightly* high expectations that I peeped this flick. Was it all good? Urgh, kind of...
For starters I will say that the flick opened on the right note; fast paced, cleverly grotesque kill sequences and fun, over the top characters galore. There was much to like here in the first act and I do recommend giving it a peep if you are into flicks from the likes of Robert Rodriguez as this film just seemed to scream his name at all turns.
Unfortunately, after the first act, the film all but runs out of imagination and steam. Maybe I just got used to it's games or maybe they just didn't quite know how to stretch this flick out from what would have been a badass short to a full length feature. The pacing gets tired and you will too no doubt.
Overall, the film is fun, and has great moments of splattering dark humor but loses it's way after a 2nd act plot turn that all but removes your faith in the filmmakers. Shame.
Well, here's hoping Mr. Lynch's next flick will have more of that "swing for the blood-soaked fences", Wrong Turn 2 had as he has progressed into a pretty good visual director. (I am all about the film's last shot. *Slow clap*).
