Review of Everest (2015) by Dragonsfoe . — 02 May 2016
Traveling Great Heights.
Everest is a very visually stunning film that has an enormous and serviceable ensemble cast though it takes while to get to what the audience wants.
There are many great things about Everest. It's cast is top notch, including Jason Clarke, Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh Brolin. The three do marvelous work and the rest of the cast who include Emily Watson, Knightly, and Sam Worthington all get their chance to shine in this great, but overstuffed, ensemble.
The film is also very beautiful providing visual wonder during the intense and exhilarating action sequences but way to many close ups in this finely directed film.
Where this film really shines is in IMAX 3D. The format is made for films like this and adds more depth and steaks to the story. Seeing it in a format besides this is a great loss, because this format is like a character in the film providing beauty and a bigger emotional punch, Showing a great instance of man v nature.
On the negative side, the film is overstuffed and some of stars do not get enough of the time they deserve, but that's what happens when you are given such a large ensemble. Another negative is that the when the pacing felt uneven and takes a while to deliver. Without the IMAX experience the film feels more empty due to the film itself being one, which hurts itself during rewatchings.
Rating: 7.6 (B).
