Review of Event Horizon (1997) by Garrett R — 28 Jul 2010
EVENT HORIZON is an effective and entirely gripping science fiction deep space film. The story and directing of EVENT HORIZON builds up every bit of information, visually and aurally, that the later parts of the film need to be successful in doing what deep space films does best, FREAKING YOU OUT!
Although EVENT HORIZON is cut out of the same film cloth as ALIEN and 2000's MISSION TO MARS (and more futuristic films that dealt with distress signals), EVENT HORIZON is a product of startling originality. Why, you may ask. Why, I cannot tell...
What I can tell is this: the Event Horizon was sent to the furthest reaches of space as a research vessel from the human inhabitants of the Moon to expand their knowledge and vision of space. The year *was* 2040, when the ship disappeared without a trace. 7 years later, a distress call was picked up by radio transmitters from the Event Horizon's engineers. Dr. Weir (Sam Neill) is sent with a rescue crew with a humane but tough Captain Miller (Laurence Fishbourne) to decipher and search the Event Horizon for survivors and supplies. What the crew is unaware of in the Event Horizon may be their grave...
EVENT HORIZON has a major buildup of tension bubbling when the crew reaches the massive ship. The tension is ratcheted up, notch by notch, as the story unfolds piece by piece as the crew members encounter the truth. The score by Michael Kamen (BRAZIL) only sustains the tension's momentum.
Director Paul Anderson may have made his capstone film here, because EVENT HORIZON wears as many influences on its sleeves as it inspired others, with it being their influences. I would like to name a few, but I dare not to. Let's just say one of them is a video game, with a sequel coming out at the beginning of next year.
Seeing EVENT HORIZON for the reason why it's so good, you'll just have to see for yourself what the hell I'm talking about! Take a look, if you dare...Be ready for more Critiques and Opinions on Every Movie I Can Get My Hands On!
