Review of Event Horizon (1997) by Ronnie L — 06 Oct 2009
Paul W.S Anderson is the Baine of my existence in terms of directors something he shares with Michael Bay and MCG. Event Horizon follows a salvage and rescue vessel that is sent off to rescue the crew of the ship known as the Even Horizon.
The ship has been missing for 7 years because of technology that enables it to jump from one part of the universe to another. The crew of the salvage vessel come aboard the ship to discover that there is no living crew and that when the ship jumped to where ever it went, it saw something not of this universe, and has brought it back, And in the words of one of the characters "Who knows where it's been.
Or what it's brought back. The film is very interesting at first before you start to lose interest in it. Seeming as how everything seems to be pointing at the super natural and not psychological really does seem to drag the film down, the interesting thing about any film of this type of genre is that the films test a persons mental state to the point of madness.
This is something the event horizon does not do. Although it is different to try to go the super natural route as it is something that hasn't really been done in the genre. In terms of plot, there is a plot or some sort of structure.
What the film fails at is to really give us the sense that any of the characters on board the event Horizon are in any real danger. It would have been interesting to see if the thing aboard the ship would look into the deepest and darkest parts of the victims souls and torture them with images they thought they would never see again, In some ways like Solaris.
Over all Event Horizon does what it needs to to give an interesting Sci-Fi Horror film but does not do anything new or exciting with it that we haven't already seen before.
