Review of Event Horizon (1997) by Mike K — 25 Sep 2011
This film is an odd combination of gritty science fiction, horror, and somewhat vague metaphysical speculation, which is unsatisfactorily explored or explained. When I first saw it when it came out, I thought it was gratuitously violent in the extreme, and I have to say, this turned me off.
However, when viewing it nearly fourteen years after its initial release, either I've become immune to violence - or it wasn't that gratuitous to begin with. Fishbourne and Neil are the standouts - although I can't help but think the plot takes some considerable liberties - in that (again) it doesn't answer any of the many questions it throws up.
They deserve explanations. Why the reference to 'hell'? The religious implications are endless, but few - if any are explored. To use violence at this level warrants equally significant explanation, but none are forthcoming.
I guess that's my main problem with this movie. Good atmosphere, good effects, second class plot.
