Review of Event Horizon (1997) by Alex B — 12 Jul 2012
A disappointing film. It is still watchable and okay, but don't go in expecting a visual, horror masterpiece. Laurence Fishburne gives a good performance. His lines are read well and he is believable.
He doesn't have much presence. Sam Neill gives an okay performance. Near the end he starts to become better, but at the beginning, I didn't like him. The directing was okay. The look of the film is nice and smooth with the little cut on the film (even on the blu-ray).
The directing shows off some very, very creepy and disturbing imagery. The directing also has this amazing atmosphere and mood. The script was okay. It does have some amazing visuals to show. I love when it shows the quick glimpses of hell.
Man, that was disturbing (if easily disturbed by this scene at regular speed, then you shouldn't go over the scene and keep pressing pause. It gets disturbing). The characters are presented fairly well.
It is a little forced sometimes. You do care about some characters. The movie isn't a classic, but it isn't bad and should be respected for it's (sort of) originality. B-.
