Review of Event Horizon (1997) by Marcus H — 10 Aug 2016
Sadly this sci-fi / B horror film had all the potential to really become something classic. Instead the portal to hell opens and it devolves in a strange allegory on the fears of science and progress. I would actually like to see two different versions of this film. One where it actually goes for the gusto all super blood orgy fest (that "lost" directors cut); and another and it's a totally different film. One where none of that happens and they actually simply save the other crew. Now after their ordeal in the extra-dimensional other galaxy; we all learn something profound and useful about the cosmos.
I'd say what stands out in this film for me is the set design and the general production value. Now at the time of writing; this film is nearly 20 years old. The CGI elements don't hold up; in fact they look extra tacky although the practical effects and the tricks of the camera and this films editing are amazing even by todays standards. It's great science fiction on the level of a Alien/s or Star Trek/Wars just they go all Hellrasier on us and it doesn't deliver completely falling apart in the 3rd act.
