Review of Even Money (2007) by Kara B — 27 Dec 2007
Actually a pretty decent film, wonderful actors and a plot that centers around how a gambling debt affects those intertwined with it. I wish Roth's hitman characters was more developed, though. He has a sinister twinkle in his eye all the time, like a sly panther that knows he has his paw on his preys tail all the time, preventing it from running away.
Roth is a wonderfully underrated actor, being that he is a character actor, and dares to play different roles. Basinger also brought her wonderful charm back here, it was nice to see her in this dramatic role, one with consequence and flaws.
DeVito as the fallen magician is always terribly touching, especially with the genuine friendship that he has with Basinger. Those were the strongest relationships in the film. Whitaker's story was allright, though, film's always run the risk of shorthanding too much where there are multiple storylines.
Worth a look.
