Review of Escape from Tomorrow (2013) by Cody C — 22 Oct 2013
Notoriety doesn't necessarily mean worthwhile. A family of four's vacation isn't exactly going perfectly... Is the father having a nervous breakdown? Is it illness? Hallucinogens? A metaphor for pedophilia? All of the above? The thing that is garnering Escape from Tomorrow with as much attention as it is getting is the fact that it is shot without permission on Disney property.
But, as the past as taught us, just because you CAN do something does not necessarily mean you SHOULD. Sure, I do respect the guerrilla style of renegade filmmaking, and yes, Disney World does look remarkably surreal when showcased in black and white, but there really isn't a whole lot going on other than three or four underdeveloped core concepts.
It toys with being a horror movie at a handful of points, and that's when I started gearing up, because it finally started becoming interesting (never mind the fact that this was what the movie was sold as), but it never commits, and it keeps falling back to this man stalking underage French girls or squabbling with the world's worst wife.
It does start off relatively strong, but you reach a point when you start to ask "where is this going?"... only to find out the answer is a resounding "nowhere". It would be different if all of this had a point, or at least a clear idea on what it wants to be, but being that it doesn't, it all is kind of a pointless exercise in filmmaking.
