Review of Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) by Raymond J — 29 Jan 2008
My favorite of the sequels. For the most part, it's also the lightest and intentionally goofiest of all the Apes movies. Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter (and briefly Sal Minneo) manage to make the surviving chimps into likeable characters, enjoying every minute of their retro-fish out of water reversal of the original film's plot.
While that movie played up the horror, this one goes mostly for laughs until the end, when we finally see why the apes have such a problem with humans to begin with. Even the rather bleak ending is tempered with humor of the unintentional variety.
The depth is gone, but it's fun to watch.
