Review of Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) by Russell G — 10 Jan 2012
This has a very different feel from the rest of the series with a number of parts that are humorous and whimsical. The concept of Apes managing to travel back in time does seem to break from the logic of the first two movies but they make it work.
A simple slip of the tongue changes everything and it turns into a giant ape hunt that gets pretty ugly. The movie makes a rather intelligent point that regardless of whether or not the apes are eliminated, our greatest enemies are ourselves.
This gets the series back on track and returns it to the theme of how self destructive and hateful the human race is, but it does not pack the emotional or experiential punch the first movie had.
