Review of Escape from New York (1981) by Tim G — 28 Feb 2009
I don't care that this film flirts with the campy side. I don't care that the story and music are so dated it's almost laughable. I don't care that in the future (1997) our country's going to be so far in the toilet that Manhattan Island is a prison.
Nope. All I care about is that Kurt Russell made this movie rock as one of the cinemas greatest characters, Snake Plissken. Say what you want about the film, but I love it. Snakes eye patch gets one star by itself, and the fact that Ernest Borgnine is even in it earns this film it's second star.
Isaac Hayes as the Duke of New York is priceless, and easily solidifies the third star, but that Fourth star goes to Kurt Russell. Fun story, fun concept, and fun music that can't be taken seriously are all tied together by Kurt Russell's over the top performance as the future's baddest hombre.
Watch it before they ruin it by doing a remake.
