Review of Escape from New York (1981) by Duncan L — 11 Aug 2010
Escape from New York is one of John Carpenter's true masterpieces: an iconic entry in both the action movie and dsytopian genres. Gritty, funny, and totally bad-ass, Escape from New York features an absolutely phenomenal cast of genre film icons: Kurt Russell, Lee van Cleef (from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly), Adrienne Barbeau, Ernest Borgnine , Harry Dean Stanton, Donald Pleasance (from Halloween), Isaas Hayes (from Shaft),Tom Atkins (from Halloween III and other horror films), etc.
A truly original world setup, unforgettable music from Carpenter himself, and a a hardcore bad-ass performance from Kurt Russell propel the film through its plot that features roving punkish gangs, underground cannibals, and truly wasted vision of arguably hte world's most important city.
An unforgettable classic that is filled with loads of fun. One of my favorite films as a child that I still love today.
