Review of Escape from New York (1981) by Jobbin F — 16 Nov 2011
By this point in his career Carpenter had earned himself reputation enough that people were willing to gamble on a film like this. Essentially a piece of pulp with a premise so outlandishly ridiculous that it may as well be "The President has been kidnapped by ninjas, are you a bad enough dude to save him?" There are some memorable visuals (Adrienne Barbeau has two of them) and ideas here.
Isaac Hayes chasing Snake across the Brooklyn bridge in a limousine with chandeliers bolted to the hood and a full size disco ball hanging from the rear view is an image that won't soon leave me.
