Review of Escape from New York (1981) by Chad H — 27 Feb 2013
I just wanna say that I love 80's movies like these. Action is just so campy and the effects are vivid and colorful and there is always a badass with an eye patch or cheesy dialogue. We start off in the super distant future of 1997 and everything has gone straight to hell and New York is now a prison area where the worst of the worst criminals are sent.
Whats interesting here is that they've colonized and created a lawless type city which just looks great, the scenery is amazing I really love the dark and stylish design of it all. The characters are great, its just one bad ass character after another, the music has that hardcore 80's buzz to it and everyone always looks so futuristic for 1997.
The story itself is interesting considering everything pans out differently than you expect. You expect the guy on the cover to be the good guy but he's the direct opposite and actually falls into the hero position through threats of death.
It actually has a really good flow to it and the action scenes are pretty decent themselves. Its definitely a must see movie of the 80's, Kurt Russel does a great job as Snake Plisken, as well as Donald Pleasence as the president, and it was even directed by John Carpenter, I mean this really is a great film to see if you miss the 80's or are itching for some nostalgia.
It really defines the early 80's in terms of action/sci-fi/thrillers. I recommend it most definitely so check it out.
