This marks the return of Snake Plissken, a very cool customer. As an action movie, it works pretty well, but as a social commentary piece, not so much. Due to an earthquake, Los Angeles is now an island where the "immoral" are sent as punishment for their crimes in the new theocratic America, where drinking, smoking, prostitution, etc.

are outlawed. The President is elected for life, and it's clear that he's a veiled reference to Jerry Falwell. The capital is even moved to Lynchburg, VA, home of real-life Jerry Falwell and Liberty University, which he founded.

That aside, it's a pretty standard action flick, with guns blazing, explosions, one-liners, and pretty good special effects. And as usual, Russell puts on a good performance. Peter Fonda has a bit part, but a humorous one.

He plays an aging hippie who lives on the island, and is concerned only about the next big wave that he can surf on. One scene is particularly cool when another earthquake hits triggering a tsunami. Russell and Fonda grab their surfboards and ride the tsunami wave, which, while unrealistic, is nevertheless very entertaining.

The ending is satisfying, and in true Snake fashion, he thumbs his nose at the status quo. 3/5 stars. Worth a replay? Maybe. JMN.
