Review of Escape from L.A. (1996) by Alan D — 18 May 2008
Man, oh, man. People just didn't GET this movie, huh? people find it hard to be ambivalent about this sequel because it's a comedy satire wrapped in a action movie's clothing. Basically it's just a remake but I'll take what Carpenter, Hill and Russell do with this great, tongue in cheek, social commentary.
The western elements are turned up to the hilt as only JC can do. The best bits are when Russell and JC wink and poke fun of LA culture like plastic surgery, latino gangs, surfers and much more. Great set pieces like the surfing scene with a believably burned out Peter Fonda and the "Bangkok Rules" scene are just a couple hints that the film was really meant to be taken in as it is.
For us Carpenter/ Russell fans.
