I would have like this film more if ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK had never been made. Its is basically a remake of Carpenter's early dystopian science-fiction film. Just as Donald Pleasance represented the right wing Reagan/Thatcher idealogue of the 1980s, Cliff Robertson's president represents the social conservative Gingrich/Rove right wing idealogue of the 1990s (boy, Carpenter was precient of the excesses of the Bush administration).

Snake Plissken rejects both Robertson's moral majority police state and its opposing neo-Maoist Shining Path opposition (led by George Corraface) and burns out the whole world with a massive EMP at the end.

Peter Fonda's surfer is great.
