A truly fantastic look at the supposed only successful escape from Alcatraz which makes sure to leave you with your own interpretation of whether or not the criminals survived. "Escape From Alcatraz" also nailed the difficult task of getting its audience to empathize with cold-blooded criminals at a time when doing so was not yet popular in Hollywood.
While not better than The Shawshank Redemption, the 1994 Stephen King film does owe a whole lot to this film that is 15 years its senior.
