Review of Eros (2004) by Pavandeep S — 04 Jan 2008
Wong Kar-wai's piece was sombre and absolutely stunning, the shots were beautiful and the way he brought out the emotions were both smooth and mezmerizing, the way he violated cinematic conventions in the last scene was a sight to behold.
Soderbergh's one is really odd, it has a zig-zag storyline that is more like a commentary of eros than an act like the previous one. It has a very idiosyncratic tune to it and it really sums it up in a very American tone, one that is innovative and yet subtle and thoughtful with desire it main focus.
There's something very interesting about Antonioni's piece. It is lambasted heavily, but I have the feeling that the way it was done was a lot of it on purpose, the dubbing and all and it is probably the more intelligent one of the rest.
The whole theme of a couple quarelling and not letting go superimposed on the characters letting go when they commit adultery was done in a fascinatingly unique manner, the actions border on pornography and it has sort of tribute feel to the 70s Eurosleaze movies like those by Jess Franco, but it is done in a very calculated and handled manner that is very Antonioni and I feel this is a fitting tribute and great film by a great director.
