Review of Erin Brockovich (2000) by S. M — 22 Feb 2009
Julia Roberts was America's Sweetheart and thus I figured contributed much to her Oscar win. Now I can set the record straight: Julia, you earned it.
After 15 minutes, I wasn't watching Julia Roberts play a role, I was watching Erin Brockovich fighting for her job, her kids' welfare, and the lives of hundreds of residents of Hinckley, CA whose water supply had been contaminated by the nearby Pacific Gas & Electric runoff pools for 14 years. An absorbing true-story David vs. Goliath as a small law firm files suit against a $28 billion corporation on behalf of the Hinckley citizenry. Albert Finney is a wonderful foil to Roberts as the lawyer talked into taking on the case as he knows the risk, pitfalls, and slim chances of winning.
The movie does a great job of highlighting both the benefits and shortcomings of our legal system without lengthy speeches or courtroom scenes. The pace slackens during the many scenes of Erin's home life as a single mother of 3, but these are a vital part of her story. Ever underrated Aaron Eckhart is solid in his role as the soft-spoken, supportive but resentful boyfriend.
