Review of Eraserhead (1977) by Keith H — 10 Apr 2015
To deny ERASERHEAD as an American Independent Cinematic Masterpiece is short-sighted. It is. There has never been a film even remotely like it -- there have been filmmakers that have attempted to achieve the surrealism and odd mix of humor and horror.
They never succeed. They should not even try. The vision is so unique to David Lynch that it almost defies explanation. Almost more of an "experience" than a movie. I've been watching it since I was 13 at midnight movies.
And, it never ceases to surprise me. I always find new meanings and odd additions. As an adult I've come to view it as a Surrealist perspective on fears of growing up, women and fatherhood. It is easier to escape into a radiator than to face your obligation as a husband and father.
Whatever it does or does not mean --- it is a darkly magical movie.
