Although the content is certainly up for interpretation, "Eraserhead" seems to be an autobiographical film; the title character is a small, nervous man trapped in his mechanical and oppressive surroundings, abandoned by his wife, and tormented by his deformed child.

The whirring score is suffocating, the escapist fantasy sequences are strange and telling (an unnaturally apple-cheeked fake-blonde fantasy woman speaks of heaven and smashes brainstems, perhaps an imagining of the various opiates the common man clings to in times of strife?), and the mise-en-scène is purely classic hollywood.

This may not be an easy film (the finale is disturbing and hard to even sit through) but Lynch has certainly accomplished a challenging feat in that he's created something the likes of which we've never seen.
