Review of Eraserhead (1977) by Jj M — 18 Mar 2011
I just can't bring myself to describe this one fully, only that it is singly the most disturbing film I have engaged in watching willfully. That baby-alien-looking thing will creep you out for decades! Having said that, there is something to reason here.
..I think! Certainly it is all part of Lynch's gloriously offbeat vision of humanity in all its good and equally evil elements. It is set in a nightmarish world of shadows and bizarre moving objects and centres on a man's relationship with a woman whom he has a child-thing with.
What develops after will puzzle you forever but the key to its cult status as a film is how and when it was constructed. It was original and memorable and subsequently aided in the evolution of independent artistic films over the following years, and I for one would be grateful for that.
