Review of Eraserhead (1977) by Sterling W — 12 Jan 2011
How can one interpret Eraserhead? Is it where we are as a society? Where we will be in the future? Is it a story about a shy, awkward young man who does his best to take care of his deformed child? Or is it a scathing response to irresponsible recreational sex? The answer is only known to David Lynch.
We as an audience may never figure out Lynch was trying to convey when he envisioned this picture. Despite all of that, It is pretty clear that "Eraserhead" is a thought-provoking film, as well as an all out assault on the senses.
Never have I seen a film in which the completely disturbing imagery was overshadowed by an unsettling sound design. The actors are fair game as well, particularly the lead, played by Jack Nance. He plays the shy introvert to perfection, and we as an audience sympathize with him completely.
Without a doubt a landmark film, there has never been a film like Eraserhead, and there probably never will be.
