Review of Equus (1977) by Wrik S — 08 Aug 2010
*** (out of four).
"Equus" is a film that is touched with both brilliance and awkwardness. The end result is somewhere in between. I found myself loving the film at times and hating it at others.
Richard Burton and Peter Firth give remarkable performances in this movie directed by Sidney Lumet and based on the stage play. Burton works at a hospital for troubled youths. His sessions with a seventeen year old boy who had recently gorged out the eyes of several horses, is distrubing. Burton tries to unravel the events.
It offers some great moments that showcase the OScar nominated turns by Burton and Firth, but much of it is over-the-top dramatically.
