Review of Epic (2013) by Orlando O — 18 Sep 2013

Epic is a beyond spectacular computer animated fantasy adventure film that does have an eye amusement with the visuals. The story may feel a little similar to other previous movies like FernGully and Avatar. But it does not disappoint with an amusing cute story.

17-year-old Mary Katherine (Amanda Seyfried) moves in with her father Professor Bomba (Jason Sudeikis). Bomba has been researching a life network of some kind that goes around the forest, and is searching for tiny human soldiers known as the Leafman. The Leafman protect the forest led by Ronin (Colin Farrell). The queen of the forest Tara (Beyonce Knowles) must choose a new heir for the throne by picking one-leaf pods. As she chooses one Leaf pod, an evil creature called Boggans led by Mandrake (Christopher Waltz) is soon after that Leaf Pod. As the Leaf Pod shrinks Mary Katherine, her and Ronin must do whatever it takes to protect it from the evil Boggans.

The plot was well done; it may have a little rehash feel from other movies. But it is beautifully done as the story does focus emotionally on the characters like Mary Katherine being distant with her father cause of their differences until a leaf pod shrinks her. Then, the movie also has plenty of comic relief with the characters like the slug Mub (Aziz Ansari) and snail Grub (Chris O'Dowd). They do have a lot of fun as the characters interact with each other.

The voice cast was great with the cast of Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, Colin Farrell, Christopher Waltz, Beyonce Knowles, Aziz Ansari, Chris O'Dowd, and Jason Sudeikis.

Epic is exciting and beautifully entertaining for kids and adults. It has enough colorful visuals to keep the eyes distracted, amazing characters, and a fun story.
