Review of Epic (2013) by Movie K — 04 Sep 2016

Nice fantasy animation which is bright, vivid and smooth. Teenager Mary Katherine "MK" (Amanda Seyfried) mum just passed away and she have to go to a secluded forest house to live with his researcher dad Bomba (Jason Sudeikis) who spend many years trying to find tiny living human of the forest.

MK leave when she feel unable to connect with the father. In the forest there's really 2 different groups of tiny human. The good Leafman and evil Boggans. Queen Tara (Beyoncé Knowles) chooses a pod to inherit her healing powers.

Ronin (Colin Farrell) is the warrior protector. Mandrake (Christoph Waltz) the evil king send his son and army to steal the pod during the ceremony. Ronin kill the son and save Queen. She was hurt by the arrow and MK who is nearby and saw her got hold of the pod and shrunk to their size.

Now Ronin and warriors must protect her and the pod and consult the wise Nim Galuu (Steven Tyler). Nod (Josh Hutcherson ) is a young warrior that doesn't like his job. Ronin find him in the race arena and inform the Queen is dead.

A slug and a snail Mub and Grub (Chris O'Dowd & Aziz Ansari) tag along the journey. Mandrake ride from underground to the sacred place and steal the pod when Nod and MK are outside enjoying the forest.

Ronin is angry that a simple task for Nod cannot be done. Mandrake want the pod to bloom in darkness and replace his son. Ronin need the Boggans gear to infiltrate safely to their HQ. MK bring them home to take what her dad found.

Ronin said they been misleading him to find the wrong part of the forest all these years. When the pet dog keep chasing after MK, Bomba use the vacuum and suck her in. He fainted when he saw her and the jar broke.

She pin the location of the Leafmen HQ at the map before leaving. The trio manage to get in. Ronin distract them all and let MK and Nod save Mub and Grub and the pod. Ronin sacrifice himself for them to escape.

Back to the HQ, they are waiting for the moonlight to bloom the pod. But the Boggans form a cover to block the moon and Mandrake attacks in. Totally outnumbered, MK need to get her dad's help. She go to the sensor camera to get his attention but after he awake, he thought he is too sad to even have illusion seeing MK as a tiny human.

So he off everything. But when he see the pin on the map he go there. MK guide him to the location and use his bat sonar frequency to lure the bats away from the moon. The pod blooms and choose the next Queen.

Mandrake is defeated by Ronin and Nod. MK complete the mission and become normal again. Bomba start drawing the tiny people for reference. MK keep in touch with Nod via the sensor camera.
