Review of Enemy at the Gates (2001) by Ara B — 06 Jan 2014
Only Hollywood could take a 3 day duel of wits between two snipers and drag it out into the most contrived piece of trash ever to grace the world war 2 genre. Complete with a completely unnecessary love story for cheap emotional effect, British accents for Russian and German characters alike, a main character who is utterly incompetent as a man of action and unlike the real life soldier in so many ways it is a disgrace to his legacy; Enemy at the Gates can be summed up in a single adjective.
Generic. The only thing this movie managed to do was make me root for the death of a child, and boo when the love interest fails to follow suit. It pulls every punch it can get away with, and yet has the audacity to try and take itself seriously as some kind of "deep" analysis of human nature.
The only good thing about this movie is the way it makes me appreciate decent film by comparison.
