Review of Enduring Love (2004) by Chris S — 11 Feb 2009
A British drama about love and stalking, oddly enough. I have a feeling this is one of those books which didn't make the transition into film quite so well. The opening scene with the balloon is interesting for its use of silence, but that remains the highlight of the film. The actors do the job well enough, but as a stalker film it should be at least somewhat creepy in places, which in my opinion it fails to be. You can easily tell the points in the story you're supposed to find creepy, without feeling the least bit inclined to find it so. Even at the climax at the end of the film I found myself thinking: "Is that it?" It simply fails to engage you, that's its main problem.
I also found it hilarious that Joe's grand academic theories about love, psychology, chemistry and biology are very similar to something I heard coming out of the mouth of a rather immature 20-year-old some years ago. What, love is just a delusion to make us procreate? Well, I never!
