Review of Enduring Love (2004) by Drew H — 08 Jan 2010
Each of the leads deliver strong performances and the director makes some interesting stylistic choices in this strange, uncomfortable film. Worth seeking out for its stellar cast (though Bill Nighy was my biggest draw and he's hardly in it), the sedate performance from Daniel Craig will be an interesting thing for fans of him as an action star to see.
While the performances are stellar, the story doesn't hold up very well under close scrutiny. The lasting effects of extreme guilt feel true but the motivations of Rhys Ifans' stalker character seem pretty flimsy and to merely justify it all as "well, he's nuts" is just lazy.
A film to be avoided by viewers who generally dislike a movie if it is depressing or makes them feel uncomfortable (though these reactions are actually a sign of a film's emotional power).
