Review of End of Watch (2012) by Grant H — 19 Nov 2014
Incredible movie. David Ayer sets up a fast-paced, powerful, intense cop drama with incredible performances from Gyllenhaal and Peña. Every time the story goes towards the typical cop formula, it flips its lights on and heads off in the opposite direction.
While the mixture of handheld documentary camerawork and regular camerawork is kind of a strange decision, it's done with precision, for the most part, with a few too shaky camera movements. But the camerawork does well to give the audience an up-close-and-personal look at officers' work in south LA.
The performances are incredibly believable, the two leads feeling like a real partnership, some of their in-car dialogue even having been improvised. The movie starts off fast with a car chase immediately and almost never slows down.
