Despite, or rather because of, its often distracting handheld camerawork and found footage gimmicks, Ayer's buddy cop action drama feels immediate and authentic while Gyllenhaal and Pena's incredibly convincing bromance adds much-needed depth and emotion to the film's gritty realism.
