Review of End of Days (1999) by Aaron S — 03 Oct 2008
There's actually not that much wrong with the premise. Arnie wants to prove his return as an action star, following several years off for health problems and other stars beginning to steal away his gig, so he takes on the Devil himself.
Unfortunately, the Devil is played by Gabriel Byrne. Which would be fine in any other movie; except here the Devil is trying to be deadly serious in a film which should be stupid, and he's spouting dialogue ripped from a host of better movies (notably, given it's Byrne, "The Usual Suspects.").
Arnie clearly isn't going to have the weight to do a serious version of this story, and yet that's the direction this film keeps trying to go in. A horrible mess, all the way to a stunningly downbeat ending which makes you wonder why you invested any amount of time with this in the first place.
