Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by Jason R — 20 Jul 2008
Among the many reasons to see this gorgeous but defiantly rational film is the dialectic Herzog establishes between taking pot shots at "March of the Penguins" and then being enraptured by penguins himself.
However, in classic Herzog fashion, he follows a lone penguin on its mad journey toward "certain death." The penguin's journey mirrors our own, ultimately, and its striking how Herzog can mine the earth for its most visually sumptuous pleasures in the service of making a mostly pessimistic film.
