Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by Kristin R — 31 Jul 2008
It's always a little hard to tell who is crazier -- Herzog or the subjects of his films. But that's what makes him an iconoclast. This time, he travels to Antarctica with unorthodox questions for his off-kilter subjects -- Ph.
D.s and itinerant philosophers alike, all working at the National Science Institute. This is not a film for those looking for an IMAX-type celebration of nature, though they won't be disappointed either, as there is no shortage of natural beauty here.
I was especially moved by footage of the deep sea floor underneath the Antarctic ice set to celestial sounding chants, among other dazzling shots of volcanoes and glaciers.
