Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by Matt S — 05 Dec 2008
Herzog observes the landscapes and life forms (including human beings) of Antarctica with an almost religious awe. His questions range from "Can a penguin go insane?" to "Will humanity eventually be wiped from the earth".
The soundtrack is filled with chanting monks and the surreal sounds of seals swimming and communicating under the ice. The images are haunting, beautiful, and bizarre. Herzog is at once an artist, a philosopher, and an explorer.
He reveals the extremes men will go to in order to discover their planet and themselves.
