Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by Sam C — 11 Mar 2009
I was lucky to see this for the first time on Blu-Ray, and its fucking gorgeous. The underwater scenes are to die for, and I felt like hugging more than one seal. And penguins.
Herzog does an excellent job here, although there are a few times where he seems to belittle his subjects ("Her story goes on forever."). Not to say that it is a bad thing, as I found it hilarious. You also gotta love how he has that conversation with the penguin expert, a man who has basically given up talking to humans to live a life of solitude with those scuzzy creatures, and asks him questions regarding penguin homosexuality and insanity. And that poor disoriented penguin, wandering off to the mountains for certain death. That image will stay in my head for years to come.
I haven't seen his other docs yet, but after seeing this I would certainly love to. Encounters at the End of the World is a sublime masterpiece.
