Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by David P — 07 Sep 2009
A fascinating portrait of a subject dear to my heart: the secret lives of scientists. A collection dominated by introverts, discussing volcano descents and science-fiction pastimes. But what bumps it fully into 5/5 territory is the DVD extra collection: a stunning, trippy 35-minute underwater sequence by Herzog's friend, and another full disc that I haven't had a chance to watch yet.
Finally, the film is all the more striking for the "end of the world" subtexts about climate change, and the thoughts of scientists' impotence in society that this invokes.
