Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by Angela B — 28 Mar 2010
An interesting documentary about the South Pole, although not as unusual as you might expect from Werner Herzog. The film doesn't focus on any one subject for very long, but skips around to different subjects in the South Pole: survival techniques, a large settlement and the strange people who live there, underwater life, penguins, volcanoes, physics experiments, and so on.
Along the way, Herzog narrates and gives opinions in his distinctive German voice. I kind of expected something weirder from the guy who directed "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans," but the film is surprisingly straightforward.
There are some interesting musical choices, mostly choral music; most of it works, but some of it really doesn't. It's fun to watch, and you learn a little about the South Pole, but it's nothing earth-shattering.
