Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by John M — 03 Feb 2013
A note of sadness pervades this study of the lives in the American colony at the south pole. In front of Herzog's lens, scientists become dreamers. Their dreams too are sad, for their observations have confirmed the imminence of a cataclysm that could mean the end of humanity.
One can't help sensing Herzog pondering his own mortality as his camera scans a range of empty mountains, not a wolf or a bear to give them life. His work will be his epitaph and he will spare to effort to chronicle the human condition, wherever it may take him.
