Review of Enchanted (2007) by Matt N — 09 Apr 2013
It's so rare to see a film that can provide subversion and parody with affection rather than bile. That, in and of itself, is miraculous, and it's just one of many things that make "Enchanted" a delight.
Amy Adams is really brilliant, bringing such sincere honesty to a character that could easily have felt like a (dare I say?) cartoon. This is also the best performance ever by James Marsden, who gets some of the funniest lines of the film.
There's some great feminist imagery on display (particularly during the epic finale) that sends a much better message for little girls everywhere than most Disney princesses provide, but there's also a lot that's really problematic (The shopping montage, in particular, is ridiculous).
Altogether, "Enchanted" is a charming bit of fun that offers a refreshing view of old Disney tropes. Plus: Squirrel = funny.
