Review of Encanto (2021) by Ryanrich — 22 Jan 2022
Other than the visual aspects of the movie being visually pretty and polished…I have the chief complaint. Disney in general seems to be trying to reinvent the wheel. They are pushing this culture thing where they try to find small pockets and then use it for inspiration.
Setting is important but what’s more important for you to write a good story. Maybe it had a message or maybe it doesn’t but it should draw you in. Look at past success. Little mermaid. Every little girl wants to be a mermaid and then ultimately when they get older to find Prince Charming.
It has elements of rebellion from your parents and going off on your own. It’s a tale of growth for a young girl. It’s a pretty fantasy. The first frozen. Super powers of ice. Also a princess to be a queen.
Loss. family. Love of family is also powerful not just Prince Charming. I just didn’t feel as intrigued with this one. I loved coco but this one just didn’t pull me in the same way. Delving into other cultures in great but it should be second to your story telling.
Just my two cents. Hopefully Disney comes out with something else soon and it’s better than the last couple.
