Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Mateusz Z — 01 Feb 2009
A very powerful classical Spielbergian epic. It is bold, beautiful, well-performed and takes it's time to tell a story greater than life. The fact that it is painfully by-the-numbers, does not reduce from the craftfulness with which this movie was made.
Apart from perhaps being a little too 'American' at times for a story about a British boy, this is a joy to the eyes. Could be used by directors as a blueprint to direct truely Hollywoodian epics.
