Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Scott C — 22 Mar 2010
If taken as a dramatic adventure film, it works. I think critics who bashed it wanted more subtlety from Spielberg - fewer sweeping crane shots, less operatic set pieces, not so bombastic of a musical score.
That's because it deals with the true life horrors of World War II, a subject some people felt commanded a less flashy approach. However, this is the war seen through the eyes of a child. To the young protagonist, it is an adventure, and it feels right that we experience it as such.
This picture contains two of my favourite sequences in cinema history. 'Empire of the Sun' routinely makes my ever-changing top-ten list.
