Review of Emo: The Musical (2016) by Gina L — 06 Dec 2016
While the audience is for a much younger demographic than this (almost) 40 year old, my partner and I couldn't wipe the smiles off our faces as we watched this at MIFF earlier this year.
We wanted a song book so we could sing along.. "Jesus was an Emo" still a favourite.
Great one liners and comic timing by the cast. Ironic, satirical and totally sweet, I just loved it.
Tim Minchin fans with kids that are a little young for Tim's style, then start your kids education here ..
As conversations about the lack of diversity on Aussie screens gains momentum (FINALLY), when I see refreshing stories such as this, my heart sings.
"you can't be what you can't see" - Yes, we also need to see ourselves and laugh. Emo the Musical does just that.
The gay conversion therapy subplot is also highly timely in the Australian landscape at this time.
Can't wait to share this with the nieces and nephews.
Ensure you also sit through the credits, you might get a nice reward at the end.
