Review of Elvis & Nixon (2016) by Omar L — 21 Apr 2016
Perhaps the least necessary part of the movie are the ostensibly obligatory title cards that inform the audience what happened to the main characters after the events of the movie. This was a sweet and innocent picture of a time when two caricatures actually met face-to-face.
It's fascinating to realize what a day in the life of two important people (and egos) could contain. Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey aren't asked to do much beyond tempered Elvis and Nixon impressions, respectively, but there is an understated pathos in Shannon's Elvis that is surprisingly touching to watch.
The performances wisely do not cross over into parody, letting the silliness of the situation speak for itself.
