Review of Elmer Gantry (1960) by Devon B — 23 Mar 2009
A down and out but very likable huckster Gantry (Lancaster) becomes an evangelical preacher for the fame and money. He falls for a fellow preacher, who unlike Gantry, does not remain aloof and detached from the fanatical congregation.
I really like the strange friendship between Gantry and the agnostic reporter who criticizes him. This film has been criticized for being anti-religion, but in my mind, its simply realistic.
